CNRS gold medal

Born on March 4, 1962 in Saint-Leu-la-Forêt (Val-d'Oise, France), Claire Voisin entered the École normale supérieure de Sèvres science department in 1981. Agrégée in mathematics in 1983, she went on to prepare a thesis at Paris-Sud University, under the supervision of Arnaud Beauville, thesis which she defended in 1986.

Immediately after joining the CNRS, she continued her career, first at Orsay and then at the Institut de Mathématiques de Jussieu (CNRS/Université Paris Diderot/UPMC). On secondment to the Institut des hautes études scientifiques from 2007 to 2009, she was also a part-time professor at the École polytechnique from 2012 to 2014.

Elected a member of the Académie des Sciences in 2010, she was the first mathematician to join the Collège de France in 2016, where she remained until 2020 as holder of the Chair of Algebraic Geometry. Claire Voisin is currently CNRS Research Director at the Institut de Mathématiques de Jussieu (IMJ) - Sorbonne Université.

In January 2024, she won the Crafoord Prize awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, in the mathematics category. This prize, one of the major international prizes awarded by the Academy outside the Nobel Prizes, recognizes her work in algebraic geometry.

In February 2024, she received the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Awards 2024 in Mathematics. The BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Awards recognize world-class research and cultural creation, prizing contributions of broad impact for their originality and theoretical significance.
